Determining the Right Coverage for Your Move

Able has the experience and materials to safely transport your household goods to your new home, however, on occasion, some items do get damaged or lost. Therefore it's important that you select the proper coverage for your shipment. To best suit your particular situation, we offer two types of protection.

OPTION 'A' - RELEASED LIABILITY COVERAGE

Your household goods are insured at a standard rate of $0.60 per pound per item - regardless of their actual value - at no extra charge. If your new 30-pound chair is damaged, for example, you'll be paid at $0.60 per pound towards its repair or replacement. For most families, of course, this level of protection is not adequate, and you might consider purchasing additional protection.

OPTION 'B' - MARKET VALUE COVERAGE

Transit: The premium for MARKET VALUE coverage is $3.50 per $1000.00 valuation (local moving rates) and $7.00 per $1000.00 (for long distance moving.) However, there is a one time $100.00 deductible for claims filed under this option. In the event of a claim, liability would be limited to an amount not to exceed the fair market value of the damaged item. As an example, a 5 year old item which cost $1000.00 when new and has a 10 year life expectancy, would have a fair MARKET VALUE of approximately $500.00. Therefore, the carrier's liability for this item would be to a minimum of $500.00, less the $100.00 deductible, towards the repair or replacement of that item.

Storage: Under this option, you have elected to extend your TRANSIT PROTECTION COVERAGE through-out the duration of the storage period. The monthly premium for this EXTENDED STORAGE PROTECTION COVERAGE is $2.00 per $1000.00 valuation. As an example, $20 000.00 of coverage would cost $40.00 per month. This protection is an extension of your TRANSIT PROTECTION COVERAGE and therefore, the valuation declared should be the same throughout both coverage.

The exception to this rule would be if only a portion of the goods were destined to our storage facility. In the event of damage, the carrier's liability would be limited as outlined under the option you have as selected.

ALTERNATIVE COVERAGE - HOME INSURANCE OPTION

Many home insurance policies offer free coverage. You should check to see if you are covered for the following;

1/ Transit Coverage
2/ In Storage & For How Long
3/ Movers Damage
4/ Your Deductible

In all cases, the insurer reserves the right to inspect damaged items, investigate repair options and when necessary source replacement items. The insurer also reserves the right to have damaged items professionally repaired before considering replacement.

There are some items that are not covered under any option during a household relocation. AS FOLLOWS: cash, jewelry, stocks, bonds, documents, stamps, coin collections are not covered and should be carried by the owner. Fragile items not packed/unpacked by the carrier, travel at the owner's risk. The carrier CANNOT be responsible for the contents of owner packed cartons.

ALL ITEMS CLASSIFIED AS FLAMMABLE, CORROSIVE, EXPLOSIVE OR UNDER PRESSURE SHOULD NOT BE TRANSPORTED BY THE MOVERS. DAMAGES INCURRED AS A RESULT OF SUCH NON-ADMISSIBLE ITEMS SHALL NOT BE COVERED.

Whichever plan is most appropriate for your circumstances, remember to ask your moving consultant to explain each alternative carefully. It's also a good idea to review your homeowner's insurance policy to determine whether or not it provides any coverage, especially for valuable items such as crystal, china, artwork, etc.
